good morning everyone and thank you for being here will see on the screen and you can do this just as a mental check cuz I wasn't sure if we could use the chat but on the mood meter just what kind of energy are you bringing to the space what kind of in a feeling emotion are you bringing to the space and I just want to give parents and everyone just like a quick 30 seconds check in with themselves before before I begin how to do apologize if my voice goes in and out and process of losing my voice cracking and one of the reasons why I wanted to do this check-in is because in addition to this being just a great important and I bring this up with my students as well when I work with them the importance of of gauging where we are because the energy that's going to impact us for the rest of the day just a little introduction about myself so many systems are supported visor for the cceis Department I do currently work at two schools so I work part-time at Burroughs middle school and then also Hawkins both schools I work as a restorative justice advisor the first today I just wanted to give parents loved ones friends family just a quick introduction in terms of what restorative justice and practices are the benefits of restorative practices of the school based of what are the practices are currently being implemented here at Burrows and then just a space for any questions or comments that may come the Stars off I'm going to have a Swatch just a quick 2-minute video on restorative practices and then I'll just explain a little bit about the history and the difference between the store Justice and I don't world is changing at a breathtaking Pace social patterns that have loan characterized human life are changing dramatically around the globe diminishing social bonds within families schools workplaces and communities humans are hard-wired to connect just as many food shelter and clothing we also need strong and meaningful relationship to thrive with all this in mind what is restorative practices Stewart of practices is an emerging social science that studies how to strengthen relationships between individuals and within communities when put into practice the effects are profound in schools students experience greater safety sense of belonging resulting in improved Behavior less bullying and less violence in workplaces bleeders facilitate direct communication among staff and address conflict as a result in higher performance Shannen Doherty and effective collaboration in criminal justice new options allow victims and offenders friends and family to repair the emotional harm caused by climb neighborhoods restorative practices more voice in the issues that matter most in a nutshell restorative-practices is the science of relationships and Community your individual daily interactions have a big impact on the world around you at your job young people and throughout your community how we relate matters this video was brought to you by The International Institute or west let's just a brief introduction to restorative practices and we're talkin about restorative practices there's two parts right so there's restorative justice which is a philosophy and a theory it originated in the criminal justice system where there's Focus Less on punishment but versus relationship-building for repairing that harm and that's something that we have started to implement through restorative practices so those are actual interventions and actual strategies we Implement in the school to build the relationships Among Us you didn't stop and admin so here I have a chart illustrating this this shift in the legs ain't so we have the traditional discipline on the left side and then on the right side into have areas I like to highlight because I often get questions about restorative justice practices as you know what's the fundamental difference and how are we keeping students accountable for the traditional discipline or think about rules and violating those rules and practices if he came out people and relationships being violated that's why I do want students to understand the consequences and impact I'm assuming you still include even in restorative practices the only difference is that in traditional discipline receive punishment being Natalia bilities after while restorative-practices we see understanding the impact and the rebuilding those relationships that were broken and understanding how our actions have impacted the other person and vice versa here's to kind of illustrations of a story so if we were to follow follow Carlos through two different kind of school setting one has zero tolerance education system and then another one the restorative practice Base education system where want to highlight is you'll see that Carlos you know he had a really rough day before school so you got an argument with his parents and he's late and we know that behavior is very much impacted by you know what students experience outside of school as well Zero Tolerance education system were thinking along the lines of punishing Carlos Ain't So if he was late then you know and he's being school that he's given detention versus restorative practice system trying to understand and build a relationship not only with Carlos but also with his parents and also with his community to find out how we can support him and also just give him that guy then said he needs dealing with you know all these factors outside of school and the candies are just too hun of examples and not every school is like this and then also some schools are next about so and I'll be off it was in the side restorative practices this data was given by the LAUSD Health and Human Services so there is data to support the impact of restorative practices so we do see that schools at implement this reduce referral they reproduce suspension and expulsion and then a disproportionate number of referrals for students of color we see a reduction in that in terms of improvement since y'all prefer they feel like they what does relationship they feel the school climate is better teachers have higher morality and retention to there a lot of benefits to to implementing this on many levels and something I eat you want to punish I seen some really amazing work in terms of restorative justice and practices at multiple schools and just one example. it was really really really special was at a high school that works at so too soon as we're having conflicts and the principal actually suggested that instead of having students go to detention they can contribute and give back that time to get that they took away from the community because when we see conflict among students and anyone in the community members it causes harm to the community so instead of detention the principal actor let them come in and volunteer their own time on the weekend with their parents to help us support a food drive and I think that's just a great example of how we can be restorative and we can also get scared to meet the community attending so within what's in Burrows and thinking about this was in the school there is one two and three chairs so won't be able to hear one more thing about Universal support on this is normally was in the classroom so Community Building Circle community building activity we are actually currently in the process list of partnering with an organization called domestic harmonizer and they'll actually come in and support teachers train teachers on implementing restorative practices into their lessons to that way it's not just something you do yeah outside of the classroom but something that we can bring into that lesson in different content areas I'm excited for that to start time hopefully end of this year or at least next year for sure a trip to is where I do most of the work so I do a majority of the harm circles here on campus unfortunately I am here only two days out of the week but when I am present I support with any type of conflict that's on campus the specifics of how I do that but I do want to and you know explain that that isn't here to support and then to your three so those are reentry circles history is up to the desk ministration in the principle that there is a tier 3 incident if the student is expelled then a re-entry circle is to bring us to embark on to campus and then do that relationship with with the school so they you're isolated they don't feel like they don't have a sense of belonging that's a different type of support but that's still within the restorative justice and then this is the work that I primarily do here on campus the harm Circle the process is generally through referral system because like I mentioned before I am on campus a few days a week so counselors administrators the teachers have access to the referral if they feel like there is an issue or some incident comes up that they need in a portent then I'm more than happy to support and we can refer that a student to me parent's lie if you do feel like your student would benefit from restorative justice or practices just please message or teachers or administrators and let them know so they can send me a referral and after that so after I received a referral I meet with each student individually and the part of that process is I give them restored of questions so you can see on the right there are restored of questions and the purpose of these questions is to get students to think about the impacts of the actions so often times when students are in Conflict it's it's difficult to sort through those and these questions kind of takes away from the Motions but give them guidance and processing those emotions and understanding how their actions of impacted others and just building that sense of empathy and self-awareness as well so during these individual meeting if both students agree to having a Circle then I'll bring them together to have that heart circle is one of the students says that they're not comfortable I respect that and then we simply go to agreement through like a behavior contract or smle Tuesday approved Behavior intervention and then from there the the situation kind of is it supposed to end at that point I will say that I do believe in Christian advocacy so if it's doing those tell me comfortable I do respect that and it's something to keep in mind to that ending often times we forget is that restorative justice is just another intervention in like interventions not necessarily free to students will benefit from restorative justice or that may not be the correct fit but I do respect their students and their decision that if we do the two students come together for the meat is very structured so it's not you know they sit down and just kind of go at each other and now so the point of the harm circle is to have Equity we do have some guidelines for students before they enter that Circle and the most important thing about that circle is speaking their truth he's often times this goes back to that relationship building so often times we only know our side of the story and I'll meet with you soon to carry their individual side but it is very important for them to hear each other out of where they're coming from the goal is not for students to you know be best friends after after this experience but it is for them to you know learn about themselves about others and build that I'm pissy and that's pretty much it's pretty much the entire presentation I do want to say I appreciate all your time and that is my
