Meet Ms. Gwendolyn Shim, our Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP) Counselor, as she shares the exciting plans her program has to offer for our African American student population!

my name is Gwendolyn Jim and I go by Glenn and I am the Beast that counselor which I will be in about in a bit I did want to at least thank the few people live in regarding the program and how they've assisted me in getting started here so course thank you Miss on and thank you dr. Martinez thank you Miss Miss Lee Spanish and I appreciate of course this is Savannah. Thank you so much all of you for John Burroughs born December 2021 until I am a newer better and I am here for the that program in addition to assisting other counselors in general with our student so I will tell you a little bit about our B stop program. Education in February 20/20 2021 school year the funding and allegations have been earmarked to address the long-standing disparities in educational outcomes between black students and their non-black Pierce so what does program we are wanting to do and attempting to do what we can to support our students more based on the disparities that we have seen that we have data showing that our students more of the push toward obtaining the academics that they might not have been able to change as well as mechanical we welcome you in helping and encouraging and Power are black students and students with the skills and increase their that increase their personal social and academic achievement and our historical background able students to access to Equitable opportunity and positively contribute to their community define success successful black student achievement is defined by high academic performance and cultural identity furthermore I just meant that utilize to cultivate these things Monitor and manage progress for black students individual Student Success plan is sp meeting with students pair with psychiatric social worker for issp participate participate in Baton Rouge work with grade level counselor for identify intervention and enrichment for students and provide parent Guardian Workshop to support next thing we're going to look at something and this is some of the data that has been utilized their sisters and understanding where does it start ER so we're looking at the current black teenage treatment status and if you look on the left side our students when we're comparing all the LAUSD you look at the rate of example if you looked at the English and English language proficiency LAUSD 42.2% and then if you look at the black Student Success matric and go to your far right to look at the West District area see that that is only at 31.7% I would like you as you're reviewing this later to kind of take a few and consider what exactly are we looking at in terms of dunnage success and achievement for a black students when they are compared with all students in LAUSD so I pointed out English but there's also I swear now the decibels proficiency testing a picture of completion attendance Advance romance special education referral please do look up system comparison and consider what how our students are black students are making their cheap and Bubbles we looked at some of the data about our students and the students are and how they're comparing I would like you now to look our population of is the population from California school dashboard and this is reviewing how many of our students are in population out of school so are you and this is from 2021 yes I grow mint numbers have changed a bit but at that time then Roman taking sure that we had 1581 students enrolled in the school showing social and economic leadership diners in on 4th Street and this is Art School number now let's take a look more specifically at John Burroughs with our school demographics California cash for this is 2020 and review our students in various groups and comparison based on the number that you just seen students are enrolled you look at roofing for English learner homeless are socioeconomic status and students with disabilities and now we have a breakdown also you may also look at my race and ethnicity are students that are African-American students are black students make up 8% of the total School population and you can review that in comparison with the other students will just take a few moments please connect me please we also have some data that reviews for us the 3-year discipline referral history by ethnicity so what were looking at is what students were disciplined and how much of a percentage of referrals were made in in reference to that discipline so for 2020 we're looking at our students African American Heritage our black students that is in pink and then we're comparing them with the other students and you can see the grouping the first one African-American students I'm sorry that the first one the first one is African American student population and comparison the next one would be again and then Asian Latino Hispanic and two or more are other and then we have our white population so you're looking the population by discipline referral and consider initially when we reviewed how many students we haven't total population for the school how many students are actually moved in the school what is the percent there are some questions that are listed on the screen and I would like you to find me review the question as you are flexible on what day do we are looking you are reviewing this information you'll note that even though our students who are our African-American students are black students only make up 8% of the total population for school discipline referral they have a high percentage almost that which matches are Hispanic students or students that are let you know in discipline referral and they have a larger number of that particular African-American students but their their numbers of discipline referral or almost bar even higher could you go to the next Grand Prix now we're looking at another set of data this data is also showing at Mississippi and its regards its function so there's a did you see my picture of it each of the areas but if you're looking at this chart we're looking at suspension in the blue is noted for Asian Americans are black Americans it's an orange and then you'll see golden color that is for white Americans and then do the blue I'm sorry the blue is for Asian Americans orange or black American braids for our Latino Or Hispanic Americans and whites in the white Americans we have in yellow or gold in color so that is for our students at John Burroughs Pixar the gator for our students in suspension area and you'll note that we have quite a large percentage of our students who are black students it has a rate of even though our numbers at the school are significantly lower look at the chart and look at the bar graph and compare as you review it how much we have in suspension in the different month that I noted on the bar graph the rate of winter student orange in color for black students suspension seems to have increased the return there are areas where you can see it was down but it was basically higher than it should have been for our amount of students citizen of the questions that you see from this chart remember this is suspension rate for our students are African-American students of black students are we just reviewed disciplinary referrals brunch the Next Room John Burroughs middle school as with the LAUSD Trevor 4. We have this program in order to assist and support our students are black students so that they're able to I'm going on towards their future goals and aspirations such as colleges and universities what has been put in place to support at the school to help in this effort so we have myself which is the best option we have additional support Personnel that will help in this cold first assist our students the best friend will have his friend counsel and assistance ministrator at the earliest and at this time because I am here in this position I am assisting with what the teacher would normally be interested in the class and prepare lesson plans we have our community attendance we have intensive coordinated early intervention Support Services systems of support advisor are we called her a c c e i we have our school psychologist and are in a mental health support counselor and our grade level counselor so all of these persons work together in order to assist our students are. didn't even call in addition to what the program books long has in to help her students the monitoring the isfp meeting the parent Workshop in the area where they have not had that support or we're not able to go to the next rain what time is that programs there were many things considered to focus Appliance help support our students and make sure that they're getting instruction that they need to have in school the focus of course was initially curriculum instruction is we want to make sure that our students are able to obtain what they need in the classroom to be able to reach those levels of the horse we want diapers presentation with in the classroom we're talking about exposure to Black Arthur's character identity and culture in less than 20 of course in the bathroom we would like map to be available to students that you should have been able to offer more diverse and reflective representation for students social justice connecting starting to get real life experiences at the end they are acknowledging what they goes through within their time frame and also they're able to the tablets those discussions that they need to have a broken their development so that there able to understand the things that occur with them as being an African-American child black student is a p e x Vol 2 Kombat legacy of math education related trauma in the black community and design joyful experiences in which didn't seem a connection to their lives so we want our students to be able to join the grass in the area in the area in the area in which book specifically in math to help them gain the skills that they need to be lacking enable in order to be able to compete with their peers individual School curriculum these are the findings that have been allocated based on a per-pupil basis to supplement lesson designed so that the monies are being put forth to help with the efforts that we are making signature costumes are in the classroom cartoon next line information about the monies that were allocated reflects on curriculum and instruction schools to supplement on audit findings to Church Catholic studies courses that will be put in at the school in order for students to have more access to a responsive education and learning the intervention structures were targeting in literacy and numeracy which is what was just woken up making sure that they get the supporting English to support that they need in the mouth and the Pint the primary promise monitoring literacy skills professional development intervention using culture responsibility Rio so that the persons who were working with her students are able to have the background information and knowledge that they need to help effectively address the needs of the teacher professional development it's listed there and it's 20 hours that is given to the teachers and the school curriculum class is also so now we're going to review the schools generate that were identified as John Burroughs would denote it as being a group to schools and these are words that have greater than 100 blacks total enrollment with Gerald one hanging out with the hanging bags that was the data that was utilized to acknowledge that there are disparities and you what does starch mean School allows for us to have those things that are being put in place the needed such as myself. Counselor and being able to address the concerns by the monitoring the is as well as other needs that our students have addition in addition to what is being put in place as far as having general information the counseling or monitoring is I'm also working on making sure that I have images and reflections of what our students need insane themselves and being recognized and celebrated first sample this month I have information that I'm submitting out to school to get everyone to help us in that celebration in the students recognized the yes they are noted and celebrated in their history and their picture regards that beat a politician allocation to an increase to 110. as you can see this reviews the money aren't the allegations that were placed fourth in various areas of the reviews they're just your curriculum the teacher professional development the school curriculum the community safety pilot the Community Partnership so the efforts that will be done to work with the different Community the community surrounding the school to help and support in this African program a secondary counselors in La Elementary kiss a concert with a social studies program for secondary so the social secondary Social Studies studies that celery and Elementary School climate averages all of these the money towards this effort to help our students with the program.
