Our Pupil Services and Attendance (PSA) Counselor, Ms. Peck, shares some important updates to LAUSD's Attendance Policy, in response to COVID-19.

good morning I'm going to share my screen in just a second but I just wanted to to all know who I am to meet you in person or via phone yet and I am the attendance counselor at sparrows so I can answer hopefully all of your attendance needs and questions at the end of the presentation or share my contact information reach out to me about any individual students you might have or any questions or anything like that but let me go ahead and share my screen all right all right so as mentioned IMDb attendance counselor and we will be going over what the policy updates and for covet specific measures are for the semester end how to best support A Student Success in that is grounded and research stuff that we have looked at for many years do all kind of start with the policy of this and then we will go from there so all of the information that I I'll be sharing is on LAUSD State steps to Safe schools are is the website right below that which is achieved. Lausd.net backslash covid so I feel free to follow along with anything I'm doing talking about on that platform or research go back to that if you need at any point this that's how frequently asked questions all of the resources that I will be sharing our on that all of the updates as they happen are on that website as well but always again feel free to reach out to anyone here at the school questions alright so let's start off with attendance if I am attendance counselor so what does it look like to be present and absent in the face of coronavirus and what not and what does he look like try to use any mines in case you haven't heard this before but if your student is not physically present in their classroom and that is you know every day any day they do need to be physically present in order to be counted as present they are considered absent. It even includes if there is any in on their classes so new guidelines suggest that if it's didn't test positive that they aren't really want them to get rest if they do have the opportunity to zoom in or checking information with their teachers they cannot be counted as present on there profile or in our school district unless they are physically present in their glass so as far as truancies and all of that goes I did share this in the last presentation so I feel free to reach out if you have any questions regarding Henderson. that I am not currently looking at any students who are absent or excessive absences in regard to so if they are coded appropriately which means that baby was tested on campus or we received the information that your student tested positive or was in close contact with Icelandair quarantine formation should be updated in our system and if not always feel free to reach out we can always make sure but I am reaching out to any parents or anything that that is the reason that other students are absent as far as truancy goes so again feel free to reach out to me if you have more specific questions on that specific of time and for this present and I will reply but I know that is always a question of do you know what's true and what looks what you know how can I vaccination I did want to include this update as well because I know that there have been some concerns about when to get back to the tower to get vaccinated what opportunities do we have with all of the information so highlighted the very particular so basically all students were eligible for the covid-19 vaccine are required to be vaccinated and that is currently anyone who is 12 years or older is required to be back in order to be on campus and that is any lausd's physically present school so if they should have already received and in order to be permitted I know that sometimes our students haven't turned 12 quite yet or you know we're still in the process of getting those things so if you are questioning when that should happen and what happens when my student does turn 12 that is this next bullet point for you just didn't see where eligible to have her seeing that vaccine so anyone who is 12 years or older on their 12th birthday they have up to 30 days after their 12th birthday to get their first dose of course the van at by the second birthday you also let everyone know the CDC has approved by there for anyone who was five or older so if you don't want to wait until your student self birthday or want to get it out of the way then Oliver Middle School students to qualify to get. clinic on campus or around this community and we do advertise those things as they come out so always check our social media platforms or school website that has a lot of information on when and where to get vaccines if you are still not sure about what to do or how to get them that is something that you can do and I do recommend as soon as possible being able to do that for student to turn newly 12 don't have any issues obtaining their daily tasks in there for permitting them to come onto campus again to reiterate 12 years or older that you are need to have a physically present on campus from asking so this policy is something that has changed as well masking is required at all times and doors and out so you know I am the sole person in my office my office door is closed I'm So currently I'm not wearing a mask but as soon as I open my door it is a requirement that I am also wearing my mask and it is a requirement that students are also wearing a mask indoors and Outdoors that includes our lunch area when they're not eating it when they're not in the process of eating they are required to have their Mass back on the types of masks that we are requiring as a district for our and our employees are surgical-grade masks or higher so we cannot do cloth masks any longer but to also ease your minds in the event that this is something that is a little more in the school does have masks that are appropriate to be wearing on campus at every instance so per request they are available for your students immediately to get them a surgical grade Master higher just to help support the Stacey of all the students in the employees and staff and everyone on campus all right so here are the update for isolation and quarantine guidelines has recently changed as of this second semester and is a little confusing but I'm going to try to break it down on step-by-step to kind of go through in case you do have any questions or concerns about it again feel free to reach out to any anyone including myself to is on campus to stop up campus if you're not sure where your student falls in regard to this but again it's on that achieve. LAUSD Corona virus resources Page look on that for if you want access to these infographics I'm going to go through them but if there's a positive case on campus and you have not been contacted directly you are to proceed as business as usual on continue that in person routine there will be someone who reaches out to you to tell you that you cannot come onto campus and the processes of what that looks like it. is for you but let's go through each of these so that way you know what to do so again we're going to start with quarantine protocols and I'm going to break this down as much as I can but again I know it's so confusing process so I feel free to ask questions or reach out to anyone at the school if you do end up having additional questions about the process of this so close contacts can stay in school this is a new if they are exempt so that quote-unquote exempt or if they qualify for modified quarantine the what is an exempt student look like what does exempt mean perk student or staff member is an individual who is asymptomatic which means that they don't have any symptoms of covid now no sneezing no runny nose no fever nothing they also need to be fully vaccinated that is a student who has no symptoms is fully vaccinated or has no that has no symptoms is fully vaccinated and maybe they tested positive within the last 90 days then those students are considered exempt as far as modified quarantine is our students who are asymptomatic employees who are asymptomatic maybe Works exposed in a school setting and while being supervised by staff and who the one that occurred with masks so they were Towing all the safety protocols I don't have any symptoms they were served at school and the school doesn't currently have an outbreak and like I said any outbreak or anything like that that would be notified to you directly if there is no outbreak at John Burroughs there's nothing that we need to worry about that last one is not currently relevant but it is important to note that the modified quarantine or the modified students off are still asymptomatic so no symptoms and we're exposed potentially in a school setting and we're falling off a few guidelines so those are the two cases of which they are still allowed to continue to come to campus student t-test on or after they've died of exposure to look the same either both of these students in these situations have tested on Viber after they in the modified corn say to not participate in before after school at 2 not include beyond the bell do I need modified corn incidents are still required to go home afterwards so what does corn what rights do first it is staying at home they the idea is that we are testing after day 5 of exposure and sode 0 is the day that it happened and then day one so five days after that we want to be cussing so that is a PCR test to make sure that our students who have been exposed to potentially are not positive. either stand or fall into this category that we talked about and if they do not have a positive test result but they do test negative and they are permitted to come back on if they don't all answer that except for modify crunching situation this is where we're looking at if they do go into a modified equations and they should still continue coming and they would still test on days I just to be sure that everyone is safe and then we would proceed as coming to school so we can close contact stay home if they do not qualify for an exam for modify quarantine otherwise this is the process that they will be following so here are some isolation protocols do quarantine as when you're exposed isolation is if you touch them to your self or if you have tested positive with the outside. so what is happens if you have served us so we do this again symptoms could be any of the symptoms that we've talked about you know that's the key fever for sure coughing sneezing runny nose that is listed on a daily pass that is a symptom we want to make sure that we're monitoring that if your student has symptoms these are the steps that you would take you want to take a PCR test as soon as you want find a symptomatic testing site so again that is at this website the achieve dilated. Net covid testing appointment so if your test sites for that or at least 10 calendar days have passed with your systems first started and you have not had a fever over the last two digit 20 last 24 hours and your sense of improving if that is the case then when was on the next the next part of the if you test positive your skin test positive then you're going to follow the same covid-19 positive with symptoms section and I'll go over that next if your unit is negative then I'm at home until the fever has to say or at least 24 hours and the symptoms have improved and then they can come onto campus and they'll be permitted without an issue and it's advice to everyone regardless of status all right so here is that promised covid-19 positive with sent them so we have texted we have been identified as a positive covid case and we do have symptoms this is a process that we will follow we're going to stay at home until at least 5 so five days against a zero is the day that you test positive for your student tested positive day one is the following day so after five days we can test again and if we have a negative test results and your student can resume coming to campus however if you are positive after day 5 and you do need to have your student stay home for 10 calendar days and they can return to school after after. And as long as this fever has subsided for 24 hours now I know when we test positive for not taking another PCR test we have what is a rapid antigen test and treat me different tests. basically testing whether our symptoms after day 5 those are again found on the website where you can get access to those the school has a rapid tests as well should not be your student case but if there's no symptoms there's no fever you have a negative Rapitest antigen test after day 5 on your student can continue resuming classes all right so now we're going to go over that I'm covid-19 positive with no stuff these are students to have tested positive but they do not exhibit any of the symptoms that hinder that you had that are listed on The Daily, so what we want is for that to be home until at least 5 days have passed and then take that take that rapid test and if they are negative and they can continue coming to school so even if they don't have any symptoms we still want to follow that we have to wait until 5 days because they tasted positive and we want to take that after the fifth day so that way we can support as soon as I'm getting their continuation of learning if they are positive after 5 days and they do feel like that waiting 10 days and then going to take a PCR test for 90 days after the testing positive any student who tests positive there are actually in it not to test list where they should not be testing again because it's possible that a PCR test is going to have a false positive result because they still have the the systems are that are they still have the virus in their body but it's not something that is expressed to other individual so that's why they can come back because they are safe to be around people that are not causing any exposure however their PCR test will have a high likelihood of testing positive which is why the antigen test is the one we want Michigan basketball I know that was a lot of information I know that is very you know if this than this though always like I said though free to reach out to any school officials on myself included if you have any questions regarding wear your student falls are any concerns and what it looks like to send your students to school during this time just know that as the CDC updates policy so does Ellie unified and so does John Burroughs do we are following as close as possible with all of the school regulations and we are just trying to follow in doing her best to help ensure the safety of everyone so we are you know we're we're we're working for into that and of course this year has been a very complicated one with supporting you know our continuity of learning in our ability to have students on campus and I know he had a lot of contacts going back and forth so I know that it's been a really big disrupt in our learning processes that you know there are as much as we can be doing to support our students success we are doing that so I did want to go over what it looks like to support Student Success in the second semester so that way we can really get back on track as much as possible I'm going to go through that as well so what are the two things that we really got to be focusing on our routine development and organization and these are again things that have heavily researched do with this is stuff that is spread throughout all of Child Development we want to make sure that we're supporting our students success and the best way so why would structure and routine be important plants that has really been invited but it really has a power struggle between you and your child any type of developing children are really going to benefit from the structure routine life style that helps create a sense of security it also helps them learn self-discipline and how to spell regulate with that normalizing every single day routine it does help our children learn how to do special as I'm sure you are familiar with how we perform every single day it's really helpful to start those developing skin as soon as possible so the CDC highlights and breaks down in the really easy to understand way the three key elements of providing structure looks like and so they just kind of highlighted them here so this is three really big components of structure you know which includes. Routine or creating routines for our students is consistency predictability and follow the consistency is doing same thing every single time every day we're doing something we're doing it over and over to Sisseton see is very much a key to supporting our students in their success of predictability so it's a lot easier to support something and go through anything if we are predictable so that is knowing what to expect children are way more likely to get on board with something if they understand what it is and if it's happening every day and if they know what is going on next and then of course the the key to all of that is follow through so we want to enforce any consequences you really want to make sure that we are following up with what we say and same things that make our students really understand what the consequences of their actions might be organ actions for that matter so again CDC break this down in a really easy way easy to understand why so I I want to just keep it with that so there are four big steps in creating a routine so first of all we went to identify the routine all the things that should occur during the day and decide on their order so you know we can create morning routine maybe they have practice or there first sporting event or music something that they need to do for that picture that they need to participate in any hygiene related matters brushing teeth after a shower anything like you how long were wanting to get sleep where I seriously want to factor that into our our day in our time and what it looks like you're making sure we're thinking about all the things that happen throughout the day obviously every day is that but we want to try to in an easy amount of laying out what we have try to find a the best list that we can go off of dailies for that week read that structure in that routine so in order to do that we can collaborate with teachers and learn what they expect from any type of learning that there have been two or you know we're in person so really if you know everything out your stuff if you have any questions for you know what your expectations should be we want to include any time for school work family socializing and play physical activities chores anything else you can think of that only add to that and we want to make sure that this routine works for the entire family not just your child that you as well the next step is explaining everything so we've identified you know all the items now we want to explain it to our children so we want to make sure that they understand what the expectations are because like I said we want to have those consequences and at the end if we're not meeting with the expected so at the daily schedule right we're coming up with that we're explaining what that looks like to our children we are discussing the daily schedule and we might have to do this more than one time it is something we talked about daily until it becomes almost ingrained in their mind but we want to include everyone who is a participant in it so that is you know any family member who it may or may not impact so you know maybe that's for the wings or or an aunt who helps pick up school or drop off to school or whatnot I want to allow for any input of our child as well because maybe they have different ideas that can help support the best routine for them and then we will start in a very visible area you want to make sure obvious what we're doing every single day with the expectations are and make sure that it can be easily staying the third step is falling the routine so doing our best to stick with the routine of core life happens right we make a routine and something different happens every single day but as much as possible and especially when it's really difficult for us and our students to follow a routine do you want to try to an oryx the routine every single day and we want to stick to it to the best of our ability this is definitely not easy it's something that's very very difficult I'm going to speak for myself when I say following a routine especially when I exercise is on there something we want to discuss with our children about seeing what works best for them and what some realistic expectations are and really supporting you know what looks great for them but this is that consistency and not follow through we really want to highlight the key elements of routine by by enforcing eighth of it by following it and that's every single day and it's for everyone's the more we do it the easy way and finally discuss the consequences right we want to talk to our children about what happens when they don't follow a routine so maybe that looks like the loss of privileges or you know if it's something that's really really difficult the follow then we want to you know can find any supportive Professionals of any school Personnel that you can reach out to to see if there are things that we can do to help social emotional needs of our children but we definitely want to have consequences for routine and I know for me for an attendance counselor purposes you know so whatever that looks like in the morning being on time to school that is something that we really want to hold on to write a consequence of being late to school that they eat with me or their counselor or they have lots of privilege in the lunch reflection so stuff not that we do here at school on there are consequences for our actions if not you know I'm not specific routine that was apparently really want to make sure that we're also reiterated what the consequences are meeting with expectations that we had set for everything so we stopped if we need to adopt but spell create a everteen up and continue to work so maybe a routine works in the beginning of the school year life is changed we need to re-establish a new routine and that's completely okay maybe create a complete different routines somewhere else and then reinforced here are some examples of what may be a routine or schedule very very simple Hydrate with pictures so I can wake up brush teeth eat breakfast very simplified ideas throughout the day to do or it can something maybe that's listed in the time frame so I expect you now you do wake up at this time works dinner every single day or between this time in this time and then you know you have some time to do XYZ in the morning or like brushing it only took you this many minutes of this is this the next thing that we do I'm really structuring it that way if that's something that's helpful and supportive but I'm up to you what you feel like is the best ways for you and your family just definitely creating a routine discuss the organization so we really want to support organization as much as possible this really helps our students success in different ways but we can an example for students in our organizational skills by using calendars making to-do list finishing tasks without procrastinating it's opportunity tell her students that they can succeed when they are you're falling through on the routines and it's a lot easier to make something happen in the moment and it is to push it off cuz now let's just say we have a test tomorrow we haven't studied at all Welsh Sandy really hard all of that information at the last minute so it's a lot more helpful to Our Success when we start you know really procrastination to the side and focus on the things best support our organization you want to reward orderliness so look for opportunities to create our children and recognized for their organization and their success has noticed that they started their homework in Media when I got home let them know that you you saw them and that you see that they're working really hard and you're really proud of that they're doing and they should be proud of themselves as well you want to practice it together so we can't tell her children be organized not the organizer stops right we want to do organizational activities together so just like planning things or maybe we want to plan a birthday party or dinner or something like that you know organism organizing the house together may be taking up the space and what the expectation might look like for that organization together in that way definitely be partnered with your child and help them understand you as well I'm you are definitely a key partner of implementing organizational skills you want to start small start small don't expect their children to organize everything I want right I mean I am a pretty organized and I would stay but I get easily overwhelmed by a lot of things that are happening so sometimes just starting small had one easy goal accomplishing that one goal and then moving on to the next that's going to really support success because we'll see you know focusing on one little item is going to help increase and maximize our success or not way so maybe that could be just cleaning up a spot so that there is a clean spot for homework to happen so that you know idea kitchen table might be a certain area on or whatever works best for your student just may be picking up that area first start off our successful organization maybe as a timer I know a lot of our students get distracted so I'm it's easy to you know lose track of time or you know spend maybe a little too long on certain things or if your students are a little start with how long they need to have to touristy like to take forever sometimes so setting a timer say okay we are going to start cleaning up we're going to spend five minutes will do then you know you can go back to you rescheduled whatever it was you were doing in the meantime but we're going to set a timer during this time and ask for help so if your child is this organization seems pretty severe dr. support whether that's to school or another person that you need support from all morning to support an individual definitely reach out and talk to people we are no silos here we really want to partner with you you want to support Student Success as much as possible and you want to be partners with you as well I saw the last bit of my organization was feel is just designating a work area right though our students are going to need the space in order to perform their best or the second semester and that best works with an organized space and a successful environment so we don't want to designate this area. somewhere that is a sleeping area because oddly enough when we are sleeping in certain areas like a bedroom or whatnot then it almost helped me no alludes to this idea of being tired it is in a supportive environment or in a weak mind in order to work on homework or do organizational type things so as much as possible we want to promote productivity I not designating asleep area as our designated work area they want to make sure that it's well-lit because ice rink and really occur if you're having a hard time reading or focusing on computer screen or on a the people like that for too long you want to make sure it's quiet so that means that there's no distractions event so no phone calls text messages Tik-Tok videos Instagram to pull up television or anything else that you can think of you want to really create a working environment that is quiet and allows the students to remain as focused as possible it is include in a putting in some ear plugs or some headphones with calming music that really helps them we want to have like a do not disturb sign perhaps you know so students can really focus on their success if that's something that works for you and your family then definitely see how and again with being organized every item having it placed on a desk or wherever our work environment is we want to use you maybe a shoe box organizer to really access it should they need and be prepared to be sure that your child always has the supplies that they need so we want to focus on offering opportunities for students to be successful by preparing them for their success and providing those supplies Warehouse so again if you have any questions on anything that I presented then definitely feel free to reach
