Dear Parents/Guardinas,
This week, John Burroughs Middle School is recognizing Digital Citizenship Week by helping students in grades 6–8 think more carefully about the choices they make online and the digital footprint those choices create.
Every post, photo, comment, video, and online interaction can contribute to a student's digital identity. As tweens and teens begin sharing more content and communicating with others online, it is important for them to understand that what they share can leave a lasting impression and may be seen by audiences they did not originally intend. Common Sense Education encourages families to help students build a digital footprint they can be proud of.
The attached Common Sense Education Family Tips flyer, “Help Kids Post, Comment, and Upload Responsibly,” offers four practical ways families can support these conversations at home:
- Be a positive role model and ask permission before sharing photos of others.
- Review privacy settings together and discuss what information should remain private.
- Talk about how people's social media posts shape the image they present to others.
- Search your own names online and discuss whether you are comfortable with the information and images others can find.
We encourage families to review the attached flyer together and continue talking about how students can make responsible, respectful, and thoughtful choices whenever they post, comment, or share online.
Together, we can help our students build positive digital identities and become responsible digital citizens.
Esta semana, John Burroughs Middle School está reconociendo la Semana de Ciudadanía Digital ayudando a los estudiantes de 6.º a 8.º grado a reflexionar más cuidadosamente sobre las decisiones que toman en línea y la huella digital que esas decisiones crean.
Cada publicación, foto, comentario, video e interacción en línea puede contribuir a la identidad digital de un estudiante. A medida que los preadolescentes y adolescentes comienzan a compartir más contenido y a comunicarse con otras personas en línea, es importante que comprendan que lo que comparten puede dejar una impresión duradera y puede ser visto por personas a quienes originalmente no tenían la intención de llegar.
