Healthy Digital Habits: Helping Students Find Balance

As part of our continued focus on Digital Citizenship, John Burroughs Middle School is encouraging families to talk with their students about creating healthy and balanced technology habits.

Common Sense Education recommends five simple ways families can support healthy media use at home:

• Create screen-free times and zones, such as during meals, homework, or family time.
• Explore built-in digital well-being tools, including notification settings, screen-time limits, and turning off autoplay.
• Model the digital habits you want your child to develop. Students often learn as much from watching adult behavior as they do from conversations about technology.
• Help students recognize how different online activities make them feel physically and emotionally, and encourage them to choose digital experiences that are positive and constructive.
• Talk about how technology companies make money and why many apps, games, and social media platforms are designed to keep users engaged for longer periods of time.

Developing healthy digital habits is an important part of becoming a responsible digital citizen. By working together, families and schools can help students make thoughtful choices about when, where, and how they use technology.

Thank you.
