Students are exposed to a constant stream of information through social media, television, websites, videos, and their phones. Developing strong media literacy skills can help tweens and teens better understand the messages they encounter and become more critical thinkers and informed consumers.
This family resource from Common Sense Education offers five practical ways parents and caregivers can strengthen media literacy at home. Families are encouraged to question the purpose behind media messages, recognize advertising techniques, explore different perspectives, think carefully before sharing information online, and use a variety of credible sources.
We encourage JBMS families to review these tips together and continue conversations at home about credibility, bias, misinformation, and responsible sharing. Helping students ask thoughtful questions about what they see and hear online is an important part of becoming a responsible digital citizen.
