I want to get my name is Sam Crow in the Magna coordinator and JB. Miss Miss nap was just speaking she is our and directional coach over English and history and Miss Siegel is what as well she is our math coach and she's actually are instructional coach over Math and Science we also have a few teachers I will be speaking with you and they're available to answer any kind of questions you have over content curriculum that goes on in the classroom Mr Attwood work and the tree branches I miss so I can make sure I would water for sixth grade teachers in mr. Sanchez, success with our computer science elective all right hi we are JB where we are at a magnet the type of magnet that we have our theme is a gifted magnet we're also an sas or school for advanced studies school and we had to do language program Greenville and a Spanish a little bit on our Awards we have won numerous Awards and the gold ribbon is actually a California or California recognizes our honors outstanding up in public schools implementing the state standards in priority areas the magnet schools of America Ward I specially proud of that were cuz I am the mac and coordinator it is awarded by the MSA high schools in America with the National Organization and it recognizes schools that demonstrate an example of commitment to their academic standards for the Innovation I'm there to wards that they do award and the magnet school that sounds that is actually the call Mara to work at a category and it's only wanted to select a group of magnet schools on every year the most recent award is it supposed to watch award and that is that what about the Nationals us there with a dancing excellence in the middle of middle in the Middle grades we took a deep dive when we into our process of using and our operations are curriculum and with all of these Awards represent what we do with the school site we presented to the stay or to the association and then they determine whether or not I'm with qualifying a lot of these programs that we have they they published and they're there table for schools to take a look at it. They may be representing some of that we're really proud of that we've been on our large we do have about set 1500 students this year and we probably averaging between 550 to 600 in each grade level now within all of that even though that sounds really really big we we have a program I'm within the school was in the residential program basically means that you live with in a residential area you can apply for the school for advanced studies the language program the train Spanish program if you live with in our community I would know if you live outside our area would you have permit programs to the same a lot of the same program however if you're in that sad and you an area it's a little different in terms of applying then if you live outside of the area and of course are doing these programs for in Spanish and the kids with her dual-language programs both of the program and auto 50/50 mom meeting at 2 entirely so we and the hill we talked about you know if your shopping around it's a good idea to take a look a lot of different websites or a lot incomparable website a really great one is cast and this is available to you to the public you can actually pick any three schools put them in and it'll tell you how they how they Stack Up side-by-side as a whole school so all of these grades all right old school not just imagining I just a say I shut the door probably the closest we can get and entrusted comparing apples and oranges or apples and apples I should say so we're over here on the left along with your fingers other schools outside of Nepal Revere better about you know eight or nine percent percentage points away from each other so we're all very similar in well doing very well so if you're comparing schools are looking for school it's a good idea just to connect if you see a school that has a lot more orange or yellow it just means they have a lot more to grow if you want it is so to speak and this is the course last year we did not take that so this is from a year ago all right. Enrichment programs there a lot of stem activities at our school and a few years ago we traveled at the San Jose to I look at a school that had a wonderful partnership partnership with with Google in a multi-million-dollar partnership with Google so there was a lot of technical site a lot of Robotics just a lot of programs embedded everywhere and we came back with a couple ideas one we wanted to make a Makerspace Makerspace room for our kids it would what we saw in San Jose was was $90 so they had to sound so the latest video I'm a grinch being all that but we came back and said how can we offer the same type of activity or experience rocket took a room I got it it was just a storage room and transformed it into our meeting with some of the videos that you see some of the teachers going to make videos with content we also have to ride three were bobbits from Lego robotics Club program which one computer science elective and then we had a easy robot program for a program which is in another election boating course she sounds as if these days which is our latest Innovation and just to reiterate we are the only Middle School and High School District that this technology also we are a Verizon Innovative learning school this is our brand new Verizon I think in addition to the tech not to confuse you in any way shape or form we we are not a magnet we we are getting magnet and the opportunities at the students or even what you're seeing right now is open to everybody what are your Madness these opportunities will we have a Jazz Ensemble we have a Orchestra newly this year we have a French I left him a CCU college courses as Randy this year we're really excited about that to be partnered up with l a c c and we will actually be offering college courses this spring semester here for a few more pictures with regarding the all-girls robotics club actually started as I said about it back in the 90s from San Jose Munoz. steel and we use it in our school we did the same thing they had something similar about the concept here and we started with started a lost with only 30 to 40 now and there's over a hundred girls in the in the program and that as mentioned in the video they just recently won LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robotics competition is there a Makerspace you know before we launched anything with the kids it's always important that the teachers are on board and buy into whatever we're going to roll out so with respect to the Makerspace we brought everybody and when we went over there my thinking process where I'm teaching afraid and projects and bring them into the Makerspace to finalize the Z space is on the bottom right in those are teachers explore the Galaxy there are their conscience Bill English teachers teachers science qualify they have at least three point find a GPA and in getting some extra characters Society built on of the chapter Builder are there on the on the right hand side our music program as I said thanks brother for the strong when they do play it incredible they've played in front of other schools are four other schools competitions they brought them awards are really proud of the program Agana program is he that is in the mail you know that the students to collaborate with professionals to put on the production at the end of the year but a lot of it is Jayden created sons of the septic line sometimes it correct alone I'm not choreography examples of the shows that they play we actually we're winning first place for a number of years in a row so we're so proud of that straight winning streak down in Orange County and we competed in an Orange County in a very competitive category and the reason we went to Orange County's cuz they didn't have it up here in La for for awhile this last school year she brought it back even though they took whatever whatever he scored in Orange County we did not earn first place in Orange County on this last year but in 2020 are scores earned first place and then Los Angeles or really badly beyond the bell with you have a lot of Athletics Athletics and programs at the school and soccer and beyond the bell after school we have PE how to spell education department I'm sure no problems like a green and gold or March Madness was it which is basketball running tips the biggest question that I have and I don't think I have mrs. Thatcher Maria with me so I'm going to do my best to explain on the between the two if you have any follow-up questions specific to the sa that I'm not able to to answer this is a triple Rhea R SAS thinking criteria and the content do an English class or an English magnet sixth grade class is going to have the same content as an English 6th grade essay after school for advanced study with management there are points any time you enter a magnet program if you're in elementary school and you join in elementary school you'll get 12 points when you meet elementary school to go to to help you get into your middle school in Middle School you get another 12 to help for high school that those 12 matriculation points are not humid so you're not going to have money for when you go to high school it's just too matriculation points meaning when you're ready to go from 5th grade to sixth grade or from 9th grade on Central place grade to ninth grade now if you're not in a magnet program I'm you can still all right wait list every year that you apply to Magna on time and you're wait-listed you earn 4 Points up to a total of 12 the program the Magna program did this in order to another Avenue or wait for parents to get in tonight and then I'm at they weren't already in transportation for families in middle school is provided if the family resides five miles or further and it's a Radiant Smiles meaning straight line so straight line from the address to the school not including no turns on Google directions to church with respect. there is a priority to residential families if you meet any of the eligibility criteria so if you're identified as gifted or if you meet the four critical area required for the program you have two priority so basically you're in a residential area and you're identified as gifted in your eligible you are automatically given a seat in the RSA there is no try station and there are no points associated with them studies program also if you do if your eligible there is no need to apply to your choices are applied at Our Lady of the sea. to create an application this tends to cause a lot of confusion with a with our residential families and the reason the district Johns this is because they don't want you to have to apply to a c. is that yours is actually so how does one so make sure they get into that SAS programmer that seat if they're coming from a residential talk to the residential school gate coordinator or assistant principal and then they will send a list at the end of the year June and you to mrs. echevarria are so once again it if you were to Blind want to make sure that you know your your schedule into SAS classes and you you belong to us you want to make sure that you speak with your gate coordinator at your school site you don't know who that is to your sister principal or the principal one last thing on the gates that are magnets Argentina whatever the content is the riggers going to be about one to two grade levels higher in those programs during which a dual-language program the Korean dual and a stye if you're coming from a Korean dual-language school elementary school like like Cowan Elementary School for example you automatically qualify cuz you're coming from previous train to Landis truck coming from either of those programs that you are interested in the program that you can apply If the child speaks at least ER at with a fluency is up to the third grade level so if they can at least speak right now understand or comprehend up to third grade level they can apply they will have to take a short ton exam 2 to make sure that it's an appropriate setting for them and the reason is if not a program you don't speak any other language at all now they mentioned earlier to of the content areas for example Math and Science to be taught entirely in the target language don't Ireland in Spanish hireling Korean which is why they ask they ask for the 3rd grade on level because if you don't have that so I'm going to turn it over who's going to talk and explain a little bit more intense about our accelerated math program see all you there yes I'm here I'm going to go ahead and let you know a little bit of accelerated math Pathways you can think of them is another in addition to programming into magnet SAS to a language or whatever program your children are in the way that it works is that the typical sing it would happen is that your child programmed into Mass chicks when they first come to John Burroughs and that's in any program that they're in is common core math 6th those are the standards now if the child is in a magnet or an sas program we would also be incorporating the elements Youfit instruction of depth complexity and Novelty and one of the reasons we are the district does it this way is that middle schools are going to be larger than the elementary school so we are drawing kids from a larger area especially when we have a magnet or we allow permit program and so Lennox everybody is getting on a solid foundation to be prepared for the following grade levels for high school for college xcetera so you can see her on this Slide the students would typically come into Common Core math sticks and what happens at the seventh grade level is that any student in any programs that earn an A or B and CarMax check for both semesters and scores Network seeds on the S back automatically is programmed into accelerated Common Core math 7 so that's the split that you see right at the 7th grade level and there's nothing you have to 5 for nothing you need to do it's just based on their data we had acceleration for the students for whom that's required or or part of providing that their work at at their challenge level which is where we want students to be working we want them to be constantly growing and improving and achieving to the highest possible level now if your child is in the accelerated 7 pathway wouldn't have happening that in seventh and eighth grade they do three years of math in two years so by the time they get to high school there a year ahead of the typical student and would be starting geometry in 9th grade and so that is something that a lot of Middle School's it's not all provide that would be again providing depth complexity and Novelty at the 6th grade level and then adding on acceleration at the 7th grade level for the students you need that John Burroughs in a few other Middle School we have an additional layer of acceleration because we're such a large school we typically have about 30 students per year that require acceleration in 6th grade starting early to meet their particular needs and again there's nothing you have to apply for nothing you have to do special what happens is when the students come to Burroughs we give a placement test all of them every student in every program and the placement test is 6th grade math standards so if the child has a high score on that and that indicates that they have already mastered a great deal of the sixth grade math, and so therefore require early acceleration and we do have a specialized cohort that we invite students to join if that's what the data indicates is appropriate for them we have an excellent teacher Sexton who teaches a horse and she has a partner teachers please work together so they're very good at the curriculum for that particular level of students the end result is that these particular students are doing cr-10 S5 9th grade two years I had a typical student because of the degree of acceleration they essentially do math 6th and 7th and 6th grade content that they've already mastered that we do it's called compacting which is that you if you went baby touch on it to refresh their memory and then you move on to the more advanced part that is connected to that same content in 7th grade they do two years of math not dating Algebra 1 and then they would be taking geometry and E Street in Algebra 2 in 9th grade. electrical because that is again we're trying to have options so that all students are placed at exactly the right level for that and we need to engage in a lot of differentiation make sure that whatever the particular needs are that child they are working at the level that's appropriate for their own bro as a student I am happy to answer any questions about this topic in case you are serious about it and want more. Corral Mister, you need to unmute yourself starts to think counselors and support staff we do have a three academic counselors and a full-time psychologist full-time mom with a Catholic social workers so your sixth grade counselor right now wish this year if you join us will be a mystery mr. Chow will move with the 6th graders to 7th grade 7th grade 8th grade in order to to build that personal connection with the students whenever I start to talk about that the counseling stop it's a good segue into our school being a safe Noble environment for our students and this goes back to our we do have them every year the kids design your own shirts and every year it's a little bit different to that he's excited about cookie demon and possibly have a design on the shirt so we did and we get us to the students every school year we have something we will have two speakers speakers and presentations to students and whatever you're thinking about bullying in the school site what's important to know or to understand is that the school has to have the support structure in place to handle any kind of situation whether it's some Colombian teams that operating situations or student crisis some middle school and a lot of things to happen gold ribbon award had you written with that in mind a lot of the programs that we have in place War to help with the building resilience with their students the counselors included and it's so important that whatever middle school you go to your confidence. They have this any kind of situation that might great so you are transitioning now from a number system to to a letter system and all income would you expect all incoming 6th graders to have at least a c average of course we would love for them to have a higher average this is the time during the first semester or a lot of families that are Easter receiving scores across the board may I actually receive a FAL maybe they receive it dealing and it's very shocking however what's nice is that you get a progress in addition to teachers reaching out counselor reaching out about you no homework assignments not being turned in or when you receive the promise and students have the opportunity to improve that grade all the way up until December so you know maybe the first five in the first five weeks they have a deer sale on the den in the 10-week maybe they bring that up to the Sea shocking it happens when we want to watch him parents just to do you prepare the 5-week progress report 43 is built in to give parents and students a chance to improve their grades this is our current distance learning schedule every Tuesday and Thursday. 13 and 5 and Wednesday and Friday to 4 and 6 Mondays are shortened days and they alternate Monday this is a close and every. Is at least 30 minutes of a live fish alive and in our case here with the live room session we go over there to remind teachers and parents are trying to pretend Zumba to you're just upset she be not on a screen for so many hours in a day so it's it's a combination of the live session or a synchronous learning I was getting used to these words and I'm offline learning where their students completed when they can if they're on there on time, racing and we are so excited for winter come back on to our campus when and when that might happen if course we we don't have the set date yet and we don't know if it's going to be like this tradition or if it's going to be a hybrid model course there's a lot of factors in math when it's going to be by in a regular setting RCN dismissal of 249 and every Tuesday they dismiss early at 1:25 and every so often will have a back-to-school or open students have a minimum day at 12:24 this is an in-person or a certain program so once they come back under 6 free classes will be cord so it is will have the same English History ST Math and Science be this is an example of a schedule so you'll see they start off with Mission and home reminder for periods 1 2 switch to miss Schuster they go to lunch and come back to miss Schuster go to PE with a separate teacher and then at the end of the day and this case they go to miss Schuster now 46 screen we want to keep the school small possible for them so we do core PE well so there are there are only six graders during. Ward hello everyone my name is Mr Attwood and English and history here at John Burroughs both and host school and in the SAS I've been at Burrows 2001 I love the school it's a great school to learn at home we have a great Community here a very diverse community and and we have a student body that's really dedicated to being lifelong Learners which is a great thing to be a teacher and be part of that I want to show you just a little bit about what we're doing digitally curriculum wise right now I was just as learning but also a lot of the stuff I'm going to show you we also incorporate when we're in person because we do want the kids to be familiar with technology and we do you want them to be able to navigate a lot of these and use a lot of the conferencing tools and things like that so they can collaborate digitally as well as in person so I'm going to share my screen and this right here that I'm sure find you now can everybody see my screen OK Google ready you've probably seen schoology because of what your son or daughter is doing an elementary school AR Facebook for our school district basically and all of the kids assignments all of their grades are on here so this is our launching page for everything and like I said I teach a history so kids will go into my class I'll have a zoom Link in order to join my zoom sessions and we alternate days for her odd and even. We have all the assignments and students can always see what they're missing or what I need to make up they can submit their assignments directly in schoology they can see what grades they got on their assignments and the teachers can also give feedback on the left you see all of these different apps that were using right now and one of the night things is one of the nice things that we have our digital versions of our textbook and so in 6th grade world history is is part of the curriculum so we're we're looking at ancient civilizations like ancient Egypt China India and many other places and we use a variety of digital tools to access that the students also have hard covers of their books students like to do their work and in the old-fashioned way of use and paper they can do that and then they can send us a picture of their work and and we can grade it virtually so there's two ways for them to access and this is a new program that was just adopted here it's from now Geographic and it's a very rich and multimedia and things like that and in embedded in the textbook are videos and ways of students can collaborate on projects I think like that like I stay in sixth grade we look at ancient history so here's a picture of Stonehenge and are the Middle School history curriculum in the 6th grade ancient world in the seventh grade Yugioh the medieval and early modern world and then an eighth grade the eighth grade focus is on US history so we really give the kids a good introduction to history over those three years and then when they go into ice or say they going to work out so I love teaching history I was a history major I was a medieval Studies major and graduate school so so history is definitely my passion but we also teach English and language arts is very important for the common core standards again we have our English program online so there's a digital presence whether were learning from distance learning during quarantine or whether weren't instructions we have all of these resources online and this is our or English program which is called studysync which is very closely aligned with the Common Core content standards that students in are learning for language arts they also have their math and science curriculum online and aligned with the common core standards and master science teacher but I'd history and my partner and Wilson that's really a nice adjustment for the kids when they come to 6th grade it's not like they're going from having one teacher to having six teachers overnight instead when they come to have three teachers and the teacher if one teacher for Math and Science Injustice and that along with the other things that mr. Corral mentioned with having their own lunch having their own PE. The sixth graders get to kind of have their own little community at school which really helped them it's just too to like the middle school was 10 be kind of kind of nerve-wracking and and and scary so we're here to help them acclimated to that as smoothly as possible all of our literature all of the text that we reader online they're also the program also includes multimedia with videos the kids can pure edit each other's work directly through this website so they can write something and then anonymously another song see that writing and give constructive criticism so it's a way that we with writing one of the really important thing is that kids have the ability to evaluate each other's work and structa Van friendly way and the so this website we use even when we're in person learning so that's kind of one of the I guess Silver Linings of this of this covid outbreak with schooling is that we thought in the I have new digital resources that we can now bring back into our classroom even after we're meeting we're no longer distance learning and we're meeting in person and so I thought I'd discovered a lot of new cool things on the way but I'm going to be using now whenever when we do get back from class I'm going to be using these different website these are just two of the major ones a whole bunch that you can see over here on the left a bunch of different websites that we use things like Google Earth are great for teaching geography and showing the kids 3D models of of the world we live in so I'm really excited about taking that forward in to learn John Burroughs hopefully will be back sooner rather than later but we don't know that so we are preparing to incorporate all of these things whether we're teaching from home or whether we're teaching person what I wanted to do was just give you a little bit of an overview kind of what we're doing digitally right now in history and English some of the resources that we have to grow back to you Miss and Miss Kim oh yes I am I miss him I teach 6th grade English and history as well I'm in the magnet program and answer at Woodward and I we actually do collaborate crashing I may just want to let the parents know that whether your child is going to wear the neighborhood program or program or the magnet program all of the teachers would you collaborate together and so we can test for one another and from each other's arm I just wanted to quickly share with you a little bit of what we do in our classroom and so I just wanted to re-emphasize and that we are we are reinforcing 21st century skills which is going to help your children be college and career-ready and so I just wanted to let you know that the technology that we use a sin by digit aren't I supposed to rain this morning and also when were using on technology of the Blended learning tool in our classroom is that it's not just for such as Chieftain or augmentation I'm so it basically means it's not just about replacing taking notes with a pen and pad Home Depot and it's not about getting rid of our hardcover text bus but it's actually cooking students unto you even more than that and so when is sing. I do in my classroom and what we've done this year is that students are able to use that their multimedia resources to keep the knowledge that these learn and to create a project. amplify that show off on what they have absorbed in their content so the one that I want to show you which I think we're running out of time so I'm probably going to have to skip over but a podcast find her at the expository I'm content that she learned I'm in are in my class on and so some of the students decide to make a video on other students decided they're going to make a PowerPoint presentation on but this didn't make a pie chart and it cost her child because she actually did it based on I'm her dog and she's very sweet and I think it was really great because it was an extension of her learning in the classroom other students who have done stem activities that are based on like history and so they were able to record their stomach tivities and some I'm into sure that there was ideas out with her and forgot it. So another example of how we are modifying their learning by happening in our classroom and in addition we are also using technology to create new toy in our in our classroom so R8 were able to seize and I cause decreased postcards on from ancient civilizations and this one is from ancient Mesopotamia by including like a picture that you're actually able to include information on and they collaborated with one another so it was it was it was going to be a collaborative effort so this is that they are going to be bugging you working on this the Clyburn element of this next I'm in so those are some ways that we are incorporating technology to get them ready for not just not just a college readiness but then also Wendy are going into each new career he will have to learn how to work in teams I will have to learn how to how to solve problem and we're trying to teach them the skills I'm in our classroom so that's a presentation about with the Cincinnati I know we're running short on time so I'm going to try to do a quick my name is Michelle Sanchez and I'm one of two computer science elective teachers are John Burroughs middle school and it really quickly I want to show you the curriculum what is it that students your learn we use a code or curriculum which is used by millions of students off from all over the world that they have three Kirkland's the elementary the middle school and high school so we use the Cs discoveries which is sort of like a bridge to the high school it gives them a good foundation to basic coding skills and it's awesome in block mode let me show you some some of the things that they learn under strict stop with the second unit they learn how to write HTML and they learn how to make a website using actual website for one of my students this year so they learn how to coat it and using tags and then you learn how to add CSS to make their website and incorporate pictures you can also they're not published publicly but they're still linked that they can share with their family members and friends so that their friends can get a website on the phone and then the third unit is Dale Earnhardt JavaScript so as you can see it's in block mode but this is to help them transition into text mode you click here this is text text my name is this actual JavaScript is an example of a game that's one of my students turned in last week and so it's totally playable and you can again send it to your phone and students can play these on their phone or tablet I'll send it to friends and family members and so those are some of the examples of things that they'll be doing they'll give you any different computer languages in addition to that we also have Vex robotics or they'll get to build different robots and the purpose of this this is the programming this is a program that they used to program robots after they build them they learned they have to do a different challenges and and so they have to program so that the robot to meet that challenge like getting to specific spot or moving a certain distance and they can virtually practice coating on a monster ready they can send the code to the robot and try it out and then another thing that we do in there is we have 3D printers in the classroom and so every year the design for example of History artifact and we don't get to Prince Ali just because it takes like 8 hours to paint one item but will print a few every year but the whole point is to get us an understanding of how 3D printers work and and and hopefully it's something that they like to learn more about in the future so no mining go in my classroom is to make it fine I don't want it I don't want the first experience with coating to be difficult or timid dating so that when they go to high school it's something that they hopefully enjoy them and get into it about computer science classes and that's pretty much it.
